Benefits of Membership

Monthly Meetings
AAGSNC holds monthly meetings that include guest speakers, workshops, seminars and networking with other members.  Meetings are generally held on the third Saturday of each month from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The meetings are usually held at the Dimond Branch of the Oakland Public Library, 3565 Fruitvale Avenue, Oakland, CA  94602-2326.
 
Field Trips
Members can attend regularly scheduled trips to the local Family History Center and receive assistance with their research projects. Participation in organized research trips to the Salt Lake City Family History Library and taking part in special events with other historical and genealogical organizations are included in our program.
 
The Baobab Tree
The Baobab Tree is our quarterly Journal.  The journal includes news of AAGSNC activities, articles written by members and other contributors, tips for beginners, how-to articles, bibliographies, members’ success stories and many other valuable entries.
 
Weekly Research Support
Electra Kimble Price is available at the Family History Center, 4766 Lincoln Ave, Oakland, CA, on Thursday evenings from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to assist with your research questions. If you would like to check with the Center before you visit, the number is (510) 531-3905.
 
Barbara Dunn is available at the Family History Center, 4766 Lincoln Ave, Oakland, CA, on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to assist with your research questions. If you would like to check with the Center before you visit, the number is (510) 531-3905.
 
AAGSNC Night at the FHC
Electra Kimble Price is available at the Family History Center, 4766 Lincoln Ave, Oakland, CA 94602-2595, the first Wednesday of each month from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. AAGSNC members and members-to-be will have full use of the library during that time. This is your opportunity to work on your research and get suggestions and help if needed. If you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced researcher, you are welcome. If you would like to check with the Center before you visit, the number is (510) 531-3905.
 
Members Online
Members may list their surnames and contact information in the Members Online page of the AAGSNC Web Site. This information is available to other members and all Internet users who might visit our web site. The Members Online page includes the members name, e-mail address, a list of surnames and the locations being researched.
 
Surname Queries
Members are encouraged to post genealogy queries in the Surname Forums where they have more flexibility in writing their own surname query. Members are automatically notified when someone responds to their query.
 
Family Reunions
Members may announce their upcoming family reunions on the web site calendar. The announcement can be made as far in advance of the family reunion date as desired by the member. Announcements will remain on the calendar until the reunion date.
 
Ancestral Charts
Members can have their four-generation ancestor chart posted on the web site. Ancestral charts provide visitors to the website with more information to help determine if they have a connection with the member's family.
 
Resource Directory
Members have access to a comprehensive directory of links to genealogical resources we have found useful and collected here for your convenience. Members may add their genealogy related web site or recommend a site for addition to the AAGSNC Genealogical Resource Directory.
 
Study Groups
Members may participate in state-specific study groups.  A list of the currently active study groups can be found on the Committees page.
 
AAGSNC Forums and Mailing List
Post your surname queries in our Genealogy Forums.

The AAGSNC-Research List is a medium for information exchange regarding problems you may have encountered with your genealogical research.

The African American Genealogical Society of Northern California is a nonprofit organization incorporated in the state of California.

The AAGSNC Staff is made up of members from the local community working as volunteers.
