Black Family History Day Was a Success!
On Sunday, February 20, the African American Genealogical Society of Northern California held Black Family History in conjunction with the Oakland Family History Center. This event was a massive success and was the brainchild of Electra Kimble Price who was graciously assisted by Judith Collins, Diana Ross, and Jackie Stewart.
There were nearly 200 people in attendance. Writer and historian Antoinette Broussard, author of African American Celebrations and Holiday Traditions, was on hand as a speaker and volunteer genealogists were available to answer genealogy questions and provide individual family research assistance.
Here are words from those who attended and/or volunteered:
“The event was great. The Family Search Center was beautifully decorated with flowers and African Artifacts. The Center surprised Electra [Price] with a cake to honor her years of service in genealogy. The cake was presented at our volunteer gathering before the official meeting.
The Center head estimated the crowd at 200. The visitors were very enthusiastic. It was so much fun to watch people with their first experience seeing their family in a census. The speaker was excellent. She had interesting genealogical material and was a fine presenter.
The center was so happy with the turnout. They thought they might have a similar event in about three months.”

“The Black Family History Day at the {Regional} Oakland Family History Center was AWESOME! – did I say awesome? The response from the public was magical. People literally came in waves! It was great to see everyone pulling and working
together as ancestors were located, one by one.”
